A U.S. Sugar Corp. project has received the 2006 environment award from the international trade group Energy Institute for having very low emissions among bagasse boilers.
The boiler is fueled by bagasse, the residual cane fiber resulting from the raw milling process. The boiler produces steam, which is co-generated into electricity on site. Each year's cane crop provides power for both the mill and U.S. Sugar's refinery operations.
